So earlier this year my Rock Band drum pedal broke. It was probably a month into owning the set. I managed to repair it with a piece of plastic and a whole lot of tape.

Now this past weekend we managed to break one of the drum pads. One of my roommates is really hardcore at the game and he plays lefty so the green pad was busted. You could tell because you could hear something rattling around. We looked up online how to open up the drum pad and found a lot of youtube videos on how to open the drum pad for mods or fixes.

If you look at the drum pad from the back you’ll see four rubbery nubs. Those nubs actually hold the drum pad in place. So the way to take off the drum head is to slip you fingers in between the drum head and back and pull the head off from one of these positions. You can push the rubber nub from the back if that makes it any easier. Be careful because my roommate’s fingers were cut open right above his fingernails because he shoved his fingers in between the hard plastic and let the plastic close on his fingers too much. After you get the first one off it should be easier to get the rest of them off. When you take the last side off don’t yank too hard because there is a wire connecting the head to the rest of the drum set. You don’t want to risk yanking the wire out and ruining your set.

So after we got the drum head off we noticed the problem. The orange piece of plastic that holds the sensor against the drum head snapped off and was rattling around inside. The sensor is the little metal coin that is attached to a wire. So we simply put the sensor back in place in the middle of the drum head (metal side facing the drum head) and taped the orange plastic piece back to the drum head.

Works like new now. I’m considering opening up the rest of the drum heads and reinforcing those so I won’t have to be interrupted by a broken drum pad in the future.

The gaming scene has been pretty slow in recent weeks so the only thing to do is keep playing the games we’ve been playing since December until the good stuff comes out. Oh and my response to the recent Smash Bros. release is uninspired. I’m not saying its not a fun game but it definitely feels like the GC version with some new characters and a super attack. I’m also getting annoyed how their characters are duplicates or variants of each other. Anyway here’s my list, I probably missed something so don’t be afraid to remind me.

I finally got around to posting the pictures of our messed up Rock Band Drum Pedal. Prior to the recent breakage we duct taped two solid pieces of plastic to the footpad. This has worked out great so far, preventing the pedal from snapping in the middle like our first pedal. However, the recent breakage occurred towards the bottom where we couldn’t cover because it’d prevent the pedal from flexing correctly. The pedal still works after patching it with duct tape to hold the heel in place.

I also came across Mega Pedals which sounds like a really good alternative in the future.

**UPDATE: I’ve posted the photos of the drum pedal here.

Last night we went through yet another Rock Band Drum Pedal. Our first one we broke within the first week. The second one managed to last for about a month and a half because of our makeshift reinforcement. It still ended up snapping at the base where we couldn’t reinforce. It happened after a strenuous attempt at Coheed and Cambria “Welcome Home”. Maybe we’re not supposed to be able to play the game above the “Hard” difficulty, maybe we’re just too hardcore.

I have to take a picture of the pedal because we managed to patch things up with even more duct tape. I don’t know how long it’ll last but whoever thought of making a drum pedal completely out of plastic is just stupid. All it would take is a couple steel rods to keep that thing from snapping but I guess its just a cheap toy anyway.

I was never that good at guitar hero even though I do play guitar. It’s probably because I never owned the game. This new guitar looks pretty slick because the keys are no longer colored like a toy guitar. The color legend will only be seen from the player’s point of view. Guitar Hero 3 is gonna have to work hard to put down the hype for Rock Band. This is just one of the assumingly many peripherals for this game.

Anyone feel like we should just be playing real guitars soon? The next thing you know the peripheral will have strings and a complete fret board.
