Will GTA IV hurt the NBA Playoffs?

In my opinion yes. This is more apparent for people like me whose favorite team didn’t make the playoffs or will soon be eliminated. My favorite team the Golden State Warriors didn’t make the playoffs this year, but while I have still watched more than a hand full playoff games I will now be spending near 75% of my free time on GTA IV.

Realistically, the video game market has penetrated so deeply into American culture that the video game players are not just the nerdy kids anymore. Yes, they are the same people that watch the NBA playoffs. The older generation will still be watching the playoffs but look for the viewer counts to drop down a bit as more of our favorite teams get the boot (Phoenix Suns). I think we’ve already accepted that GTA will hurt movie releases so TV is the next big thing.

Additionally, if the NBA finals is anything like it was last year the league will be in trouble. Seeing the Cavs get swept in the finals is just depressing. I think I watched 30mins total in those four games, and that was before GTA IV came out.

Maybe the Hawks will take out the Celtics, just like the Warriors beating the Mavs last year... But that's doubtful at best, and I'd feel sorry for KG.

you're probably right on some level. i mean, even without GTA IV, i'm less likely to tune in once my team gets bounced. and barring some miracle, that looks to be soon. well, given that i don't yet own a next gen. console, i guess i just have to throw in my copy of San Andreas and pretend the graphics aren't poo.

i think the masses would still tune in for a throwback Lakers/Celtics finals, but that's still a ways off.
