Where The Wild Things Are – Quick Review

I had a chance to see “Where the Wild Things are” this past weekend and I have to say it left me with a bit of disappointment. The visuals and soundtrack were great but that alone does not make a great movie. The movie didn’t leave me with any uplifting feelings or nostalgia I prepared myself for when heading into it. Perhaps its my own fault for having expectations that only the trailers for the movie fulfills.

I know the movie was not marketed towards young children but the PG rating will easily fool parents into taking their children with them to share in what they once knew as a great story. This movie may only confuse and depress young children. A bright child may be able to grasp the underlying moral of the story but the ending is much too abrupt for you to walk away with any positive feelings.

I didn’t expect the Wild Things to be such emo downers.

7/10 at best.

In defense of the movie, there wasn’t much to the original book… timeless yes but plot heavy no. A lot of the unexpected emotional content comes from the added complexity of film adaptation. Even though I had many problems with the movie, I just can’t imagine it being done any better..

7/10 from me too leaning towards 8 because it was visually stunning.

Next up, Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox!
